Can solar power eventually replace traditional electricity sources?

I have seen a lot of discussion on solar power and what they can do to your energy needs but I am yet to be convinced of its potential to eventually replace traditional sources of electricity generation. For one, their sizes look slightly disappointing as you need them to cover massive areas to generate significant power and on top of that, they seem to be dependent upon electricity as well. I am not sure how they work, but solar power websites may be the best source of good information.
